The first governor of Khon Kaen, Phraya Nakhon Sri Bororak BoRom Raja Bhakdi, built the temple in 1793, 80 meters height, on about 11 acres of land on Klang Muang Road, named Wat Nua. Duirng the time the city was founded, the temple was promoted as a royal temple in 1984 because of the outstanding architecture. The pagoda is a combination of Dvaravati and Indochinese styles, while the main structure remains truly representative of Isan; Northeastern
Phra Maha Tat Kaen Nakhon or The 9-storey pagoda maintains the Lord Buddha relics received from His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch of Wat Rachabopit, Bangkok in 1979 and the Tripitaka; Buddhist canon of scriptures on the top floor. Doors and windows of the pagoda are beautifully carved, featuring the life and former reincarnations of the Lord Buddha, 16 classes of visible deities in the Brahmas world, and Buddhist rites. Murals within the pagoda feature history of the town.
The pagoda was established to celebrate the 50th year on the throne of
the King and the 200th year of establishment of Khon Kaen.

Tourists can go up to pay obeisance to the image of
Luang Pu Khaow, and the Lord Buddha's footprint.
There are 1,049 Naga steps to get to the top of the hill.
For some tourists who prefer an easier way, there is another way to get there by car.
Every year, there is a traditional festival, called Tak Bat Te Vo: people offer food to the monks along the
the distance of Naga steps.
